OK-LSAMP
What is OK-LSAMP?
Benefits for Students
As OK-LSAMP Scholars, students embark on experiential learning journeys through research experiences spanning state-of-the-art labs and locations ranging from Oklahoma to Zimbabwe. The program offers a spectrum of personal, academic, and professional development opportunities throughout the year. Engaging meetings, symposiums, and workshops cover diverse and relevant topics crucial for student’s success, including finding compatible research mentors, honing presentation skills, developing posters, mastering conference and interview etiquette, navigating REU/internship applications, accessing international research experiences (iREU), preparing for graduate school, and more.
Program History
Originating in 1994 as OKAMP, Oklahoma's higher education institutions united to significantly boost the recruitment, enrollment, and retention of students historically underrepresented in STEM disciplines. In 2000, the U.S. Congress renamed the program in honor of retired Ohio Congressman Louis Stokes, a trailblazer responsible for establishing numerous minority-focused NSF and National Institute of Health (NIH) programs.
